Terms of use

The short version: be a real student, follow the house rules, and remember that anonymous does not mean untraceable. In return we keep the place running and keep your identity to ourselves.

1. Who can use Jini

Jini is for current students of Australian universities. To join you need a working email address at one of the universities we support, and you must be able to open the link we send to it. One account per person.

By creating an account you agree to these terms, the house rules and the privacy policy. If you do not agree, do not use Jini.

2. Your account

  • Keep your password to yourself. What happens on your account is on you.
  • Do not share, sell or lend your account, or sign up with someone else’s email.
  • We may ask you to confirm your university email again, for example if it looks like you have left your university or your account has been taken over.

3. How you can use it

The house rules are part of these terms. In short:

  • Be genuine. No impersonation, no fake or duplicate accounts.
  • Respect a no. Carrying on after someone asks you to stop is harassment.
  • No harassment, bullying, hate speech, discrimination or threats.
  • Keep it legal, including no academic misconduct or contract cheating.
  • Nothing sexually explicit, and no soliciting.
  • Protect other people’s privacy: do not share anyone’s personal information or screenshot private chats.
  • Report what you see, and do not file false reports.

You also agree not to:

  • try to find out who another student is without their agreement;
  • spam, advertise, or use Jini to sell anything;
  • use bots, scripts or scrapers, or get around our filters, limits or bans;
  • break into, overload or interfere with Jini or other people’s accounts.

4. Anonymity, and where it stops

Other students never see your email address or your real name, and your handle changes in every room. Nobody can unmask you unless you both choose to reveal. But anonymous is not untraceable:

  • We know which account wrote what. Every message and post is tied to your account behind the scenes, so we can act on reports.
  • Moderators can read some chats. A reported chat, or one that ended after trouble, is kept for a while so a moderator can look at it. The privacy policy says exactly which and for how long.
  • The law can ask. We will give information to police or a court when the law requires it, and we report threats to someone’s safety and anything involving the abuse of a child.
  • What you say can give you away. Your course, your timetable or a story only your friends know can identify you. Think before you share.

5. Moderation, suspensions and bans

What students post for others to see is checked automatically before it goes up, and our filters block some messages in chats. People can report anything, and moderators review reports within twenty-four hours.

If you break these terms or the house rules we may remove what you posted, warn you, suspend your account for a while, or ban it permanently, depending on how serious it is. Threats, illegal activity and severe harassment go straight to a permanent ban, and may be referred to your university or to police. Making a new account to get around a suspension or ban is itself a breach.

If you think we got it wrong, email safety@jini.com.au and a person will look at it again.

6. What you post

What you write is yours. So that Jini can work, you give us permission to store it, show it to the people you posted it for, and keep it for moderation as the privacy policy describes. That permission is free, worldwide and not exclusive, and it ends when what you posted is deleted, except for copies we must keep for a report, for safety, or because the law says so. We do not sell what you write or use it to advertise.

Only post what you have the right to post, and nothing that breaks someone else’s copyright or privacy.

7. Not an emergency service

Jini is not watched in real time and cannot send help. If you or someone else is in danger, call 000. Lifeline is on 13 11 14, any time.

8. What we can and cannot promise

Jini is free, and we provide it as it is. We work hard to keep it running and safe, but we cannot promise that it will always be available, that it will be free of errors, that you will be matched with anyone, or that other students will behave as they should. What other students say is theirs, not ours.

Nothing in these terms takes away your rights under the Australian Consumer Law or any other law that cannot be excluded. Where the law lets us limit what we owe you for failing one of those guarantees, our responsibility is limited to supplying the service again.

9. Our responsibility to you

As far as the law allows, we are not responsible for loss that comes from what another student says or does, from you breaking these terms, or from Jini being unavailable, and we are not responsible for indirect loss such as lost opportunities. None of this limits our responsibility for anything the law does not let us limit, including our own negligence or fraud.

10. Leaving, and closing accounts

You can stop using Jini whenever you like and ask us to delete your account, as the privacy policy describes. We may close an account that breaks these terms, or that belongs to someone who is no longer a student. We may also change or stop parts of Jini, and if we ever shut it down we will tell you first where we can.

11. Australian law

These terms are governed by the law of Australia, and disputes go to Australian courts. If any part of them turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still applies.

12. Contact

Questions about these terms go to hello@jini.com.au.

These terms may change. We will tell users about any material change by email or in the app before it takes effect, and using Jini after that means you accept the new terms.
